Planning a trip to Japan? This enchanting country is a blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge technology, offering a unique travel experience. To ensure you make the most of your journey, here are some essential tips to consider before embarking on your adventure to the Land of the Rising Sun.

  1. Do Your Research
Japan has a rich cultural heritage with unique customs and etiquettes. It’s essential to familiarize yourself with these cultural nuances to show respect to the locals. Simple gestures like bowing and removing your shoes indoors are customary, so understanding these traditions will enhance your overall experience.
  2. Learn Basic Japanese Phrases
While English is commonly used in tourist areas, learning a few basic Japanese phrases can go a long way in bridging communication gaps and earning the appreciation of locals. Simple greetings like “konnichiwa” (hello) and “arigatou gozaimasu” (thank you) can make a positive impression. Saying “sumimasen” to say “sorry” or “excuse me” really helped me a lot when navigating the crowded streets of Japan.
  3. Familiarize Yourself on Public Transportation
Japan’s public transportation system is efficient and extensive. Familiarize yourself with the train and subway systems, as they are the primary modes of transportation. Download relevant apps, such as Google Maps, to plan your routes and check train schedules. We only used Google Maps to help us navigate train schedules and bus routes. It tells you which platform to go to, and what time the trains or buses arrive. We also took taxis and ubers, but they are very expensive, but if you split it, you should be fine. You can also use credit cards to pay for taxi rides.
  4. Stay Connected with Pocket Wi-Fi
To stay connected throughout your trip, consider renting a pocket Wi-Fi device. These portable devices provide reliable internet access, allowing you to navigate, communicate, and share your experiences on the go. You can get one from Klook and pick it up at the airport.

Get your 4G WiFi (Japan Pick Up) for Japan (Unlimited Data) from Klook
  5. Japan’s Four Seasons
Japan experiences distinct seasons, each offering a unique charm. Research the weather during your travel dates and pack accordingly. Don’t forget essentials like an umbrella and comfortable shoes for exploring on foot.
  6. Where to Get Cash
While credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, it’s advisable to carry cash, especially in more rural or traditional areas. Many smaller establishments, street vendors, and public transportation services may only accept cash, so having yen on hand is crucial.
    • ‼️ For GCash users, I suggest you order yourself a GCash Card. It has the best exchange rates.
    • Withdraw cash from 7-Bank or any 7-Eleven.
    • Bring a coin purse. You will amass loads of coins and it will be very convenient to separate your coins from your bills.
  7. Try Local Cuisine
When in Japan, eat where the locals eat! Food prices are fairly cheap if you know where to look. Japanese cuisine is diverse and very delicious! Do not miss out on mom and pop shops that offer sushi, ramen, tempura, and okonomiyaki. Don’t forget to try regional specialties as you roam from city to city.
    • Kura Sushi is one of the chain restaurants that offer cheap but delicious sushi.
    • Takoyaki in Osaka is the best!
    • ‼️ Do not eat while walking. If you’re eating by the street, stop and finish your food.
  8. Bring a Hand Towel
Japanese toilets may be advanced, but they usually have no paper towels or hand dryers available. Just carry around a hand towel, specially during cold weather, else you will end up with very cold hands.
  9. Tote Bags are a Must!
Plastic bags are not free. Bring one to carry the goodies you bought and use another one to carry your trash, as bins are limited to toilets, and they are very scarce across the cities.
  10. Be Sensitive to the Culture
Respect cultural norms and be mindful of your behavior. In public transportation, avoid loud conversations, and keep your phone in silent mode. Refrain from making unnecessary loud noises in public spaces.
  11. Bring Your Most Comfortable Shoes!
The best brand of shoes for me that I have worn in most of my travels is Asics. Switch up two pairs of shoes during your travel, this is very beneficial for your feet.
    • Bring epsom salt and do a foot bath. This does wonders to your tired legs and feet! You can find it any drugstore or supermarkets.

Preparing for a trip to Japan involves more than just booking flights and accommodation. By understanding and respecting the local customs, navigating public transportation, and embracing the unique culture and cuisine, your journey through the Land of the Rising Sun will be an unforgettable experience. With these tips in mind, you’re ready to embark on a seamless and enriching adventure in Japan. Safe travels!
