Solo Travel: My First Day in Hong Kong
On my third visit to Hong Kong, I decided to travel alone, and I booked an early morning flight. I arrived in Hong Kong at 8:30AM, and stayed there for an hour to go through immigration, eat, and pickup the sim card I ordered from Klook.
My Airbnb in Mongkok did not allow an early check-in, so I dropped off my bags in my room at 10:00AM and decided to go around the city.
I decided to walk around the area and familiarize myself. I am not new to Hong Kong, but I wanted to make sure that I could remember where to go home at night time.
Day 1 Itinerary
Langham Place – Mongkok
It’s a huge mall with a lot of high-end stores. I wanted to checkout Mongki, a clothing store, and see if I could buy a jacket. I ended up buying a long black jacket, a long-sleeved top, and a grey dress.
If you like Dr. Marten’s, they have a boutique at B1. That’s where I bought my first Docs a few years ago. It’s usually cheaper by Php1000 to Php2000 in Hong Kong, especially if you go to 10th Ave at Citygate Outlets in Tung Chung.
How to get there:
Address:Â 8 Argyle Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon
Ride the MTR and alight at Mong Kok Station, walk towards exit E1.
Sasa
This store sells beauty products that are a bit cheaper. What I like about this store is their collection of lip balms, so I bought a bunch of them to give away for Christmas.
How to get there:
Sasa is everywhere in Hong Kong. You should find one easily.
Garden of the Stars
There used to be a whole avenue of the stars, but it is currently under repairs, so they moved Bruce Lee to the promenade. When you’re in Hong Kong, it is a must to have a photo op with Bruce Lee.
How to get there:
Ride the MTR and alight at Tsim Sha Tsui station; walk towards East Tsim Sha Tsui; take the lift next to the East Tsim Sha Tsui Station Exit P1 (press “Pd”).
Hong Kong Museum of History
After visiting the Garden of the Stars, I walked towards this museum. I want to learn more about Hong Kong’s history, so I decided to stop by. There are different sections inside which starts from the “Natural Environment” to the “Modern Metropolis and the Return of China”.
Visitor Information:
Opens at 10AM. Admission is free. You can drop off your extra stuff at the reception area, so you can roam around hassle-free. You can take photos but not videos.
How to get there:
Ride the MTR and alight at MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station and walk towards Exit B2. Walk along Cameron Road towards Tsim Sha Tsui East for approximately 20 minutes.
Ladies Market – Mong Kok
Along Tung Choi St. in Mong Kok, you will find an array of stores that sell everything for cheap. If you’re looking for things to bring home, this is one of the streets that you should visit.
Visitor Information:
Operating Hours:
11:00AM to 11:30PM (during weekends it closes at 12MN)
Dim Dim Sum
Around dinner time, I wanted to eat some dim sum, because why not? I am in China! I’ve already researched where Dim Dim Sum is near my Airbnb, so I just walked to Tung Choi St. after I dropped off my stuff in my room.
I was lucky enough to be seated after 20 minutes. Yes, there was a line. It was  about 8:00PM when I arrived, and I was 3rd. All in all, it took about an hour for me to queue and eat, but it was worth it!
What I ordered from their menu:
Funny Story:
I ordered the “Piggy Custard Buns“, and the table next to me said that it might be theirs, so I asked the server if it was indeed mine, and it was. After all their orders were served, it turned out that she forgot to order the custard buns. We just laughed it off. At the end of my meal, I wanted to take out my custard buns, but the server could not understand that I needed a box for it, she just gave me a plastic bag. The lady beside me spoke to her in Chinese to help me get a box. In the end, all’s well. 🙂
That concludes my first day in Hong Kong.
Please do stay tuned for my next posts that would have information on the rest of stay in the city.
