Travel Taiwan: A Full-Day in Taichung

Read Time:3 Minute, 27 Second

When I was planning our Taiwan trip, I wanted to travel from North to South, so we purchased a 3-Day THSR Tourist Pass to save a lot of money and time. We boarded the 203 train at 6:30AM and arrived in Taichung at exactly 7:18AM. That was so fast! To give you an idea of where we’ve been in Taiwan and how far apart they are, here’s a map based on the THSR stations:

THSR Map of Taiwan

Another thing that we did was to hire a driver for the day to help us get around Taichung. I found him via a Taiwan thread at DIY Philippines group on Facebook, He was recommended so I contacted him to be our driver slash guide. Our Airbnb host picked us up from Taichung Station and let us drop our luggage on his flat. Then we waited for our driver to pick us up at a nearby convenience store. His ride was a yellow taxi. It was big enough to accommodate 4-persons.

Zhong She Guanguang Flower Market

Different flowers bloom depending on the season. When we went there, autumn was ending soon, so some areas in the flower market were bare of flowers.

Nevertheless, we still had fun taking so many photos, especially my mother. The one below is my favorite photo.

Rainbow Village / Caihongjuan Village (彩虹眷村)

It’s a very small village full of colors. If you’re lucky, you will meet the village Grandpa, Huang Yung-fu. He is one of the last village residents. Other than this small, colorful village, there’s really nothing of interest around the area. You can finish taking photos around the area within 15-20 minutes. Then move on.

Chun Shui Tang (Kuang Nan)

This is where the original pearl milk tea was born. Not the best pearl milk tea, but it was delicious nonetheless. Not everyone can say that they had milk tea from the birthplace!

Sun Moon Lake

If you plan to come here, it is really best to hire a driver. It is quite far from the city, about 1.5-hours. We were all having our naps on our way there. There are different stops to tour around the lake, so please be mindful of the next boat ride, otherwise, you’ll miss it and will have to wait for the next one.

Before we took the boat, our driver told us never to buy any food other than the ones from 7-Eleven. I am not sure why he said that, the food offered around the area looked good, but we didn’t take a chance. The area is home to the Thao tribe, so there may be something in the food they sell that might not sit well with foreigners. I don’t think it’s something negative, maybe there were instances where a tourist had a stomach ache, which is not a good thing to have while traveling.

Anyway, the place was a mixture of eerie and beautiful. Photos can’t define the place, really. I don’t think I am quite the photographer to showcase the island itself.

Feng Chia Night Market

The night market was quite near our Airbnb, so we decided to walk to the market. When we arrived, we have no idea what to get, so we just walked around until we found something good to eat. We ended up getting Cheese Chicken. To be very honest, it was quite salty, so we bought sweet tea to alleviate the saltiness. Other than eating, you can also do a little bit of shopping here. We were able to buy some unique shirts that we can bring home.
