Getting the hang of being alone in Hong Kong

Read Time:3 Minute, 54 Second

For the second day of my solo travel, I went to the New Territories and Lantau Island. I was really excited to go to the New Territories because I have never been there during my past travels to Hong Kong, and I’m glad that I did go. I loved the long train rides, the scenery was just beautiful. The fusion of old and new is astounding. I actually missed my stop because I was busy looking outside!

Day 2 Itinerary

Lai Chi Kok Park

I discovered this park in passing. During my train transfer, I saw this park, and I thought it was beautiful. There were a lot of old local folks that were doing Tai Chi, a form of ancient Chinese exercise; walking their dogs; and some were just reading newspapers quietly. It was very serene and I was glad that I stopped walking and looked around.

How to get there:
Take the MTR and alight at Mei Foo station, walk towards the transfer to Tuen Mun, on the ground floor, you should see the park right outside to the right.

Ping Shan Heritage Trail

When I planned my trip to Hong Kong, I wanted to head to where most tourists don’t go to. One of those places is in Tin Shui Wai. In this area, you will find the well-preserved heritage sites of Yuen Long. More information.

There are so many photo-op-worthy places around this area, and I liked how quiet it was. If you’re traveling alone, this is a good place to explore. You get to gather your thoughts, you also get to see a side of Hong Kong that most people don’t get to set eyes on.

How to get there:
Take the MTR and alight at Tin Shui Wai Station, Exit E3. You would need to do some walking, I mostly just used Google Maps and followed the route.

Ngong Ping 360

One of my favorite places to go to is Ngong Ping 360 at Lantau Island. I love riding in cable cars. The feeling of being high up in the air is everything! Booking my ticket at Klook was so convenient. Avoid the long queue to ride the cable car, and do it, too. The picture below just shows a fraction of how long the line was. Most of these people have been on queue for 2 hours.

I took the Crystal Cabin to Lantau Island, and the standard one going back. I was surprised that dogs are not allowed there anymore. There used to be mountain dogs there that were quite friendly. They have been replaced with cow buffaloes. To be honest, they scared me a bit. The bulls were huge and have horns!

Tian Tan Buddha

This is a large bronze that attracts pilgrims and tourists everywhere. After getting off the cable car, just walk for about 10 minutes to find the stairs towards the Buddha.

Po Lin Monastery

The monastery was founded in 1906 by three monks visiting from Jiangsu Province on the Chinese mainland and was initially known simply as “The Big Hut” (大茅蓬 Tai Mao Pung).

It has a really beautiful exterior. I sat outside the monastery and just took in the scene of people praying, lighting incense, and going about their day.

Wisdom Path

It takes about 20-minutes to reach the peak. It was a very quiet walk when I went there last time, literally quiet. There were times when I couldn’t even hear birds chirping. I was surrounded by tall trees and the quiet. I reached the top and took everything in. The view was amazing as always.

Woo Kee Long

I bought the infamous egg waffle. It wasn’t anything special, it just looks good in pictures.

Visitor Information:
Always check their website for updates on their cable car service. It is currently closed due to rope replacement and maintenance.

How to get there:
Take the MTR and alight at Tung Chung station, the terminal is a 2-minute walk from Exit B.

Citygate Outlets

If you have the money to shop, I suggest going to this mall. Brands like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Dr. Martens, Roxy, The North Face, etc., are there.

Below is a photo by Jerro Santos of GourManila with my new Dr. Martens boots.

How to get there:
Take the MTR and alight at Tung Chung station; the entrance is at Exit C.

That is all for my second day. Please check out the posts below if you missed them.
